 Introduction:

The purpose of this lab is to demonstrate how photosynthetic rates in different plants can change in response to factors, such as light intensity, light quality, CO2 concentration, and temperature; Simulate measurements of CO2 assimilation rates in leaves and compare photosynthesis in C3 and C4 plants.

Procedure:

Since the majority of the lab relay on adjusting variable and recording data for analysis, I divided this lab into four categories and followed the procedure as follow.

•To examine light intensity, Set gas flow to a medium value and Leave temperature, carbon dioxide concentration, and the light filter at their default values.

•To examine the influence of light quality, Chose corn and set the CO2 level to the default value, gas flow to high, and temperature to 25°C. Set the light filter to white and measure photosynthesis for light values of 0, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1400,1600, 1800, and 2000 mol/m2/s.

•To examine the effect of CO2, Set up an experiment with tomato and set light intensity to 1000 mol/m2/s. Leave temperature at its default value of 25°C, set gas flow to medium, and use the white light filter. Begin with a CO2 concentration of 0 ppm and continue this experiment by increasing CO2 concentration to 100, 200, 300, and so on, until you reach 1000 ppm. Record CO2 output after each change in CO2 concentration.

•To examine the effect of Temperature, Chose tomato and set the CO2 level to the default value of 350 ppm, gas flow to medium, and the light filter to white. Set temperature to 15°C and measure photosynthesis for light values beginning at 0 mol/m2/s and increasing by 200 mol/m2/s until you reach maximum light intensity of 2000 mol/m2/s. Repeat this experiment for temperature values of 20°C, 25°C, and 30°C.
